Parkas were the most important piece of equipment Creighton packed last weekend for its four-game series at Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
“The temperature was in the 30s and the wind chill was below that,” coach Brent Vigness said. “Saturday, especially, was the coldest game I’ve ever participated in.”
Vigness said his biggest concern was injuries due to the bitter cold. He made sure if players weren’t on the field or batting, they were in the dugout with the parkas, hats and gloves that the coaches went out and purchased.
“I had more layers than I’ve ever had on,” Vigness said. “Four or five layers, and I typically don’t wear a jacket on the field.”
He even put on gloves for the first time after a parent took pity on him in the third-base coaching box and offered him some.
The cold didn’t seem to bother the Jays’ hitting.
The Bluejays (4-0) scored more runs —54 — than in any previous four-game span in school history. They scored at least 10 runs in each of the four games, marking the first time in school history the team has scored in double figures in four straight games.
CU is hitting .447 and nine players are batting at least .400. Junior Amy Baker was named the Missouri Valley player of the week after going 10 for 15 (.667) with 13 RBIs. She had four doubles.
Although Vigness said it was great that everyone got to play, he’s ready for tougher competition this weekend at the Fairfield Inn & Suites Classic in Denton, Texas.
CU plays Northern Illinois at 10 a.m. Friday and then faces South Dakota State at 12:30 p.m. The Bluejays take on North Texas and Sam Houston State on Saturday before closing Sunday with a rematch against Northern Illinois.
Vigness was happy to report that the forecast called for temperatures in the 50s and 60s. The parkas were left at home.
“It will feel balmy compared to where we were last weekend,” he said.
