    Bluejay coach likes what he sees from confident veterans

It's how those players went about doing it that excited Servais even more. "Young players, new players, they aren't very good at the acting part of the game," Servais said. "When they feel uncomfortable, their face, their eyes, their actions give you information.

    Jays off to 3-0 start

    Creighton is starting its season 3-0 for the first time since 2000 after sweeping Central Arkansas with a 5-1 win Sunday afternoon. Chance Ross led the Bluejays by going 3 for 5 and Nick Judkins hit a two-run home run in the first inning. Nick Musec picked up the win with 2 2⁄3 innings of relief. Creighton used five pitchers in the game, including first-time starter Andrew Urban, who threw 50 pitches.

    Late outburst propels CU

    Creighton needed extra innings to defeat Central Arkansas on Saturday, scoring four runs in the top of the 10th for a 7-3 win. The Bluejays (2-0) batted around in the 10th inning, scoring four runs on four hits. Nick Judkins walked to lead off the frame and advanced to second when Scott Thornburg followed with a single, his second hit of the day. Mike Gerber then doubled to left-center field, scoring Judkins and advancing Thornburg to third.

    Solid start earns Servais win No. 300

    Ty Blach started just where he left off the 2011 season, striking out six batters in five innings of work Friday as Creighton defeated Central Arkansas 4-3. The win marks Ed Servais' 300th career win at Creighton. He's 300-165 with the Bluejays, and 482-247-1 overall as a head coach. Scott Thornburg finished 2 for 4 with an RBI, while Mike Gerber drove in two runs while Brad McKewon scored twice for CU.

    Premium ContentPremium ContentClick on Premium Content on the Featured navigation bar for information.Coach Ed Servais got a taste of pitcher Ty Blach's commitment to the Creighton baseball program last summer. Blach, who will start Friday's season opener at Central Arkansas, had an invitation to play in the prestigious Cape Cod summer league. Blach had already generated some buzz with professional scouts in his first two seasons with the Bluejays, and pitching in the Cape would provide even greater exposure.

    The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association named Creighton's Kurt Spomer to its initial watch list for the eighth annual stopper of the year award, given to the top relief pitcher in Division I. Spomer, one of 45 players on the list, led the Missouri Valley Conference with 13 saves a season ago and was a second team All-Valley pick in 2011.

The past two times the Bluejays were in a similar position — in 2006 and 2008 — they stumbled, unable to build on the momentum gained by NCAA tournament appearances in 2005 and 2007.
